Villa San Michele

Villa S. Michele Built by Axel Munthe, the swedish writer and doctor, on the ruins of an ancient roman villa. Axel Munthe was born in 1857 in Sweden; he took a medicine degree in Paris, moved to Rome where he quickly became a professional man, especially appreciated by the aristocracy and higher bourgeoisie of the city. In 1876 he visited Capri for the first time, afterwards in the last years of the 19th century he decided to move to Capri after having bought in Anacapri some plots of land, where he was able to realise his dream of building the Villa San Michele on the edge of the Anacapri cliff, on the site of one of Tiberius's 12 Capri villas. An imposing construction designed in a very free style - mix of Romanesque, Renaissance and Moorish influences. The villa and its gardens contain many pieces of classical statues. It houses a collection of ancient roman archeological items excavated on Capri. Axel Munthe designed part of his estate to a stop and transit area for migrant birds. " I want my house to be open to the sun, the wind and call of the sea, like a greek temple, and light, light, light everywhere ".
