Certosa di San Giacomo

La Certosa It was built in 1371 on the remains of previous roman buildings by Count Giacomo Arcucci, powerful secretary to Queen Joan I, who became a monk. The Charterhouse suffered extensive damages during the raid in 1563 of Mustafa Pacha. Suppressed by Napoleon in 1808, the monastery was used as a prison and military hospital - during the Napoleonic wars the British occupied Capri as a bastion against the French Kingdom of Naples, but some brilliant decoy tactics by a french invasion force led to the recapture of the Island in the space of just 2 weeks in 1808. Today it is used to house temporary exibitions and conferencies.
