Villa Jovis

The largest and best preserved of the island's roman villas, in its hey day it was a vast complex which included imperial quarters, entertainment areas, baths, halls, gardens and woodland. Not much is left of what must have been its decadent roman luxury and yet the complexe is still imposing in all its splendid, solitary glory. The most impressive remains are those of huge cisterns in the centre, which guaranteed the self sufficiency of what was in effect a miniture town. The stair way behind the villa leads to Salto di Tiberio (Tiberius Leap), the precipice from which the emperor was supposed to have pitched those who crossed him.
